.Clive Barker is very popular in my family, both my parents being fans of his work, especially his horror films. He excels at writing horror and dark fantasy, exactly the type of book I feel like reading at the moment. I read the Abarat series when I was 15, and simply adored it. I will definitely have to read Abarat again, but for now I am excited to read Weaveworld, a book I’ve heard lots of praise about.
I started it this morning, and the opening lines have absolutely hooked me. Check them out.
‘Nothing ever begins.
There is no first moment; no single world or place from which this or any other story springs.
The threads can always be traced back to some earlier tale, and to the tales that preceded that; though as the narrator’s voice receded the connection will seem to grow more tenuous, for each age will want the tale told as if it were of its own making.
Thus the pagan will be sanctified, the tragic becomes laughable; the great lovers will stoop to sentiment, and demons dwindle to clockwork toys.’ – Weaveworld by Clive Barker
